Dating Anxieties
NYMag recently compiled a list of dating anxieties that plague NYers and, as a result, NY dating habits and relationships. After reading Cary’s brilliant account of one NYC “relation-shit” yesterday, I went back and gave these a second look. I actually think these are pretty dead on; as individuals we may not suffer from all of these anxieties, but I’m pretty sure at least some hit close to home for most of us. And in no way do I think these fears/anxieties are limited to just NYC.
1. The anxiety of too much choice
2. The anxiety of making the wrong choice
3. The anxiety of not being chosen
4. The anxiety of appearing overly enthusiastic
5. The anxiety of appearing delusional
6. The anxiety of appearing overly sincere
7. The anxiety of appearing prudish
8. Internet-enabled agoraphobia
9. Separation anxiety
10. The anxiety of being unable to love
What do you think? Do you agree/disagree? Do you think these are new think these are new anxieties, or generations old? For those of you in relationships/marriages, do these ever go away? Do you think that for those of us still single we should give up on the dating game, move to an isolated island in the Caribbean and start our own dating-free Tumblr-land?
