Off, off, and away!
“You’ll never guess where they’re sending me on assignment.”
That’s the phone call I got from Jonathan last evening after being called into his boss’ office. 12 hours later, at 6am this morning, he was on a plane to Anchorage, Alaska to cover his first live news story (he does the video work, not the reporting). From Anchorage, he’ll fly to Nome, where the Ididarod is run and where the high is current -27 degrees. The area is in a state of emergency, so he will be accompanied by military personnel to get there.
There’s a town there that has just received 18’ of snow and has run out of fuel to burn their heaters. A fuel tanker was on its way to help when it got stuck in ice. Now, the fuel tanker can’t get to the town and a few townspeople have already lost their lives. Russia is sending its best military ice breakers to get the tanker out and hopefully get it to the town.
…And Jon will be there filming it all.
Granted, we had plans to go to Philly this weekend (luckily we just pushed it to next), but I think this may be just a tab bit more cooler.
